If you care about the environment you will be in favor of the composting process. The program focuses on giving back to the land what it has given you. It is about a cycle that things go through in order to grow.

My friends refer to me as the kitchen composter. When they look into a pile of trash all they see is garbage, but I see things that can become a part of nature.

That’s how your life is going to be if you are in touch with nature. The organic residue that you collect when you gather different materials from the land that is converted into something black,fragrant, and crumbly is what will be the compost. The idea here is to arrange the gathered items so the soil bacteria and fungi can survive and also multiply as they all break down. The bacteria act as the converters of all the raw materials so that they must be in a workable environment with proper air, food, and moisture.

You do not have to be a pro a start a kitchen composter program. All you have to have is a big heart for nature and you are all set. The thing you need to remember is that you are doing the environment a great favor by being involved in such a process.

Where can I find an affordable composter?

They don’t carry them at the big box stores like Lowes or Home Depot. I’m not that handy so I don’t want to build one. I have looked online on Ebay but I wanted to see if any of you gardeners had any thoughts about where to get a good composter so I can have some nice black compost in the spring for my new garden areas. I’m looking to spend around the 100 dollar mark or just over that with the shipping.

You don’t need much to build your own. Just a drill and blade bit (1 1/4″)

The only thing I did was to insert a piece of aluminum screen in the bottom so the compost wouldn’t fall out the bottom until I’m ready to do it.
It works great and it cost $13 I had the drill and the blade bit

Check the status of your cities going green activities many cities are offering such as free or big discounts.
Unfortunately my city does not…I’m not sure they’ve heard of composting, global warming or going green. It’s hillbilly city USA lol!
I am in the process of applying for a grant to get the bins discounted.

Can you put sunflower plants into a composter?

Am new to composting. I have sunflowers in my garden that I am cutting down. Can they go in a composter?

Yep you sure can. Anything that is of vegetable origin ie peeling, grass clippings etc. Don't put anything derived from meat or bones. I started composting 6 months ago and mine is looking good. Also my dustbin is only half full and I do my bit for the environment.

Me and my dad wanted to start ranching worms.I just wanted to know the basics.What is the best worms to use?How many containers do I need.What size containers do I need.What do I feed them.We just wanted to ranch them instead of always having to shovel them out every week.

If you are vermicomposting, I suggest red wigglers. You can get them in bait shops. They do not live in the soil. You can use shredded newspaper that is kept damp like a wet sponge. 1 pound of worms can take care of the kitchen scraps for a family of four. You put them into a plastic-opaque container that you have drilled 1/4 inch holes in the bottom, sides, and top–because they have to breathe. Then feed them coffee grounds, food scraps, –they even eat the newspaper. But remember, they don't live in the soil. The worm castings are like a mega-dose of plant food. I went to a class last week about how to do it, and I'm really stoked about trying it! The class instructor's container was about 2' long, 1' high, and about 1' to 1 1/2' wide.

How do I keep and raise earth worms?

I have a few earth snakes and want to start raising worms form them to eat instead of going out and digging in the yard for worms. How do I start? What type of container is good for raising worms in? What kind stuff do I give them to eat? Are worms male and female or asexual? I know little and need to know everything.

bag of potting soil, a large tub. save vegitable waste such as carrot tops etc. mix with soil add a tub of earth worms from walmart or bait store mist weekly to keep soil moist keep covered and they will multiply like crazy. to keep smell down from veggies. chop or grind up mix with potting soil. no more than once a month and until you get a good amount you can probably change that to every 3 months. earthworms have both sex organs and do not need to be male and female.
keep soil moist is the biggest thing to remember add cardboard for hiding places have fun

After you have started a Kitchen Composter program it will take a bit of work and a few months turning the pile every now and then to aerate it. The pile should also be kept moist, think of a damp sponge.

You will know the right time to harvest the compost when you no longer recognize the original materials that you used to make the pile. The finished compost should look more humus-like, it is dark, loose, and smells earthy.

other than an in-sink garbage disposal, I have no idea… but in my area people will buy compost.. use a regular composter, and about a week before the compost is done, put an ad in the paper..
