i recently started a worm bed to raise worms fro fishing,?
i live in a rural area and the ants are quite vicious and abundant, and have made theyre way into the worm bed.. will the ants be harmful to the worms or since they live together in nature anyway i shoudlnt worry?
na man, they will not be harmful to the worms but they might be a little harmful to your hands when you get the worms out. you might want to get some fireant killer and put on the top of your pile. it will not hurt the worms or contaminate your soil. just a little tip. what ever you have left over in the kitchen helps out the soil that your worms are in like apple cores, bannana peals, coffee grounds are good. just pretty much and fruit or vegitable that is left over, dump on there. man i hope that this helps you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience
how do I "farm" worms?
I have a few earth snakes and want to start raising worms form them to eat instead of going out and digging in the yard and looking form them, where they could also be contaminated with pesticides. How do I start? What type of container is good for raising worms in? What kind stuff do I give them to eat? Are worms male and female or asexual? At what size or age do you think they are most delicious to their predators? I know little and need to know everything.
Raising worms can be done in your home but do not use earthworms. They are not condusive to bins and will die out. You need red wigglers. I use an 18 gallon container, box shaped that you can get from Wal Mart of K Mart, etc. I put drill holes all along the sides, toward the top of the bin to allow the worms and bin to breathe. Purchase the worms and put in the container with the dirt they came in but have the container full of bedding. I use shredded newspaper. Fill the bin about halfway full with shredded newspaper. Allow the worms to adjust before feeding. Make sure the worms are at a temperature of between 55 to 80 degrees. Dampen the newspaper but do not make the envirnoment soggy. Begin feeding after about a week with organic table scraps from veggie preparation such as carrot shavings, celery tops, potato skins, etc. Do not give them meat. As your worms begin to multiply, they will consume their newspaper bedding and the food you give them. When adding the food, lift the bedding and put the food under the bedding. Check the location to determine how long they are taking to consume food. Add food as the food in the container disappears. Make certain that you buy worms that will live in a bin. Again, your outdoor earthworms will not live in a bin.

raising worms for newts.?
My newts love moving food. And with lots of fast growing offspring I want to be prepared to add larger foods to their diet. Right now the adults are tong fed and the babies have live or freeze dried foods. I hope to tong feed the babies in a few months so they'll be friendlier to people. I'm thinking worms might be a good food for the late spring and summer. They can be chopped up for the babies and I can use soiled coconut fibre from my hermit crabs to bed and feed them. They will help break down the bedding further for compost.Best yet worm castings can be fed to hermit crabs so all my pets win.
Can I buy local worms from a fishing store or get earth worms from my garden. Any suggestions would be great.
Its better to buy the earthworms from the fishing store, in a garden you don't know what they might have. I've fed earthworms to my crabs, they love them and if the worms are alive they have fun trying to catch it.

How do you raise meal worms?
I have turtles who like to eat them but the ones you buy in the store say to keep them refridgerated. Well, occassionally some of them that I've fed to my turtles have escaped into the substrate and get much bigger. Seems like the chilled ones often just die before I even get a chance to use them and they never get any bigger because they hardly move, let alone breed. Has anyone ever bred their own and if so, what type of food and container do they need?
ive been keeping mealworms for over ten years…just get some kind of large tupperwear with air holes, half filled with oats throw in some carrots and potatoes even apple ocasianally, its not nessesary to keep them cold …after a whille all the oats will be poop get a cheep wire screen strainer and strain the poop over the garbage, put more oats in and take out the dead beetles and start again
