So, I read this article about making a compost bin to make soil, and I wanna try it. The article said that you should use red worms, but can I just use the worms out of my lawn? Or will that not work?
Thanks in advance!

These links will take you to vermiculture sites. Vermiculture is composting with worms. Places like this sell worms for composting. It is cheaper to buy in bulk from these places, rather than from a bait shop. The bait shop sells by the dozen. The Vermiculture suppliers sell in bulk. Vermiculture needs to be done indoors, unless you live in a temperate area. Worms will die in temperatures over 62F. They can also freeze if cold enough.

http://www.gardenworms.com/page.html?chapter=0&id=3

If you are looking to compost without worms, There are many sites with good info. You just have to look. I personally, built a two bin compost bin. It is 4'x5'x4'. I built this size so that the compost would heat up enough to kill any pathogens or weeds that may get into the compost. A good working compost pile can heat up to 150F or more. There are lots of good books on composting. It's not hard to do, and you don't have to have any elaborate systems to do it. You can just pile leaves in a back corner of your garden. These links are for composting in general.
I LOVE my Biostack but I was really suprised when my larger, homemade one cooked down a huge batch way faster than I expected. I may just have a new favorite. Tell me about your favorite composter/way to compost.

What do you think about worm bins?

What do you think of the Pet Poo Converter? Just Google it if you haven't heard of it. I just saw it online a few minutes ago, myself.

I just started composting for the first time. I think it's too early to tell if it's "working" but I have a bin i got from walmart.

It's not the one I wanted or even close to the idea I had in mind, but I kept putting it off and was tired of just piling stuff up in my backyard so I saw it one night and just grabbed it so I could get started.

hi my mums just bought a compost bin
i was just enquiring into wheather they create worms as im into fishing and would be cheaper really any help will do

A properly working compost gets too hot for worms to live in. However, the cooler edges are ideal for Red worms. These worms may be called manure worms, puss worms or red wrigglers and I'm sure several other pet names. They survive the active hot manure piles so, they make ideal worms for regular compost piles.

These are absolutely the best worms for pan fish. When the hook pierces the worm they emit a yellow juice, hence the name pus worm. it does have a smell that attracts fish like crazy. Use the lightest line and a hook no bigger than a 10. I use a quill for a bobber. Don't put the sinker closer than 18 closer to the hook. Usually the fish hit the worm as the hook is still sinking. With this rig and pus worms I'll guarantee you'll not find another system that can come close to this one.

I teach Jr. Master Gardener classes to about 150 students a year. One of our projects is raising Red worms in compost bins. The only time we had any failures was when adults added too much water and everything became rancid. We had to leave notes on the bin to leave the bins alone. We'd throw fresh food from the cafeteria lundhes we just ate onto the bins accumalation. The worms did the rest. We did moniter the dampness though. The worms multiplied like crazy. I always had more than enough to use on my fishing trips. Buy one container of the Red worms at the start of the season and you'll not have to buy anymore that year.

Compst bins can't create worms like the old theory of "Spontaneous Generation" but, they will help the worms thrive and multiply.

I thought I'd create my own organic compost for my new garden and my father's garden.
Has anyone attempted to harvest their own compost using Red Wrigglers or Earthworms in indoor bins?

If so, what's the checklist of supplies needed -besides the worms?

Tricky question: How large do the bins need to be per worm amount?

What can you give the worms to eat? And what can you NOT give them???

How long does it take to finally get results??

Can someone give me a quick "step-by-step" guide to indoor worm-composting?
All tips welcome and much needed!!! :^)

Check out the link. I got my son that set up, the three bin model. He's been using it for about 6 weeks and the whole bottom bin is full. Just in time for spring planting. He says he's moving them up to bin #2 soon.

Real nice guy at the phone number at the link, he gave me lots of good info.

What is the “word” for taking something that has no use & turning it into something different. NOT recycling, but…?
I may start a worm farm and work with the city in reducing waste. I am looking into ideas for a business name, and need that one word to set myself apart. I want to possibly incorporate the “word” that I am looking for into my business name. For instance…Vermi-Cycle. Maybe something with Worm in the name, but I am not going to just reduc waste; I will sell worm castings, vermi-compost, worm bins, and many other green items, as well as organic lawn service, spraying worm tea on lawns.

Wormiculture?

Not a word but a name for your business – Wonderful Worms The alliteration with the two ‘W’s could be linked with a wriggling worm in your advertising material.

Personally, I think a name for your business is the way to go then as you expand your business the name should cope with all types of off-shoots and different ideas.

Personally I think you have an excellent idea here and wish you every success.. A garden just cannot exist without worms. The site below might help with the promotion of your new business.

Hi, I have about a dozen hard boiled eggs left over and I was wondering if I can put them in my compost bin or my worm bin. I've always read you can add the egg shells but never on weather the contents of the eggs shells can go in and why not if they can't. Anyway, if I have a preference it would be to give them to the worms as we've been light in feeding them this week. Thanks!

yes but this requires a specially designed composter. Composters that can handle meat and milk products have several common features.

1) They are air tight or otherwise designed to contain odours.

2) They have reinforced sides to keep scavengers out.

3) They have aerating features that bring fresh oxygen in and promote the activity of aerobic bacteria, or in the case of the bokashi composters, they use special anaerobic bacteria.

4) They are insulated to generate high temperatures that thermophilic bacteria use to break down proteins.

Through trials and tribulations, we’ve learned a lot about the right environment for worms! In fact we experimented so much, that we managed to decimate our entire worm population. *Sigh*. Master composter and Freshtopia diva, Barb Finnin, came by to see how our worm bin was doing after all this time. Thank goodness she was so encouraging! She helped us haul our semi-composted compost (and dead worm population) to our new backyard composting bins where it can still be useful. We also get a look at a Wriggly Wranch-a multi-layered worm bin that our neighbors purchased at a discount from our county waste management. Seems that if you can get the discount, the layered method is the way to go. We will try again using homemade methods, but this time we’ll have a little bit more knowledge to keep our worms alive. Thanks Barb!
