Not sure what you are doing. If you are making compost, you need to make it in a pile. It takes a cubic yard, 3 ft x 3 ft x 3ft to heat up properly to make compost. The result will be nitrogen rich soil under the pile from the decomposition of the fungus that eats the compost materials.

Stir the pile once a week to aerate it. When you stir, you will see the molds inside the pile that are breaking down the vegetable material. If you stir more often, you will reduce the heat created by the decomposition, and the the heat is necessary for good compost.

If you don’t have enough plant material to make a compost pile, you can use your grass clippings in the garden as mulch around the plants if you want to prevent weeds and hold moisture around your plants, but it will take it longer for the mulch to break down than in a compost pile, and it will take nitrogen from the soil while it breaks down.

Kitchen plant waste like Orange peels and such make good soil amendments if added to the compost pile or tilled into the earth or applied with the grass clippings mulch. The only animal material good for a compost pile is cleaned bones. They add calcium, a necessary mineral for many plants like tomato’s.
