Can you compost in an apartment?

I live on the 7th floor of an apartment. I have a gigantic balcony with room for a small container. Is it possible to have compost without grass clipings and other weed materials. Can I compost with just veggies and friut remains from my kitchen? If so, what do I after I have filled the container with the scraps?

your best bet is a worm farm. I've got one on my balcony and i just add fruit and vegie scraps, the worms eat it and out comes good quality compost. A compost heap will probably not work as they can smell as they decompose, but no such problems with the worms. Get one from the hardware store(Mine's called Can of Worms)

Composting with nothing but kitchen scraps will turn into a stinky pile of rotten food before it turns into compost. You'll need to add some "browns" to your "greens".

Since you won't have fallen leaves, or bales of hay to add in an apt, how about shredding newspapers? Most newspapers now use soy based ink which is very compost friendly. Run your old newspapers through a shredder or cut into small strips and add them to the pile.

Remember the best (not stinky) ratio of "browns" to "greens" is about 30:1. So if you add 1 cup of kitchen waste to your compost bin, you'll need to add 30 cups of shredded newspapers.
