Can you put sunflower plants into a composter?

Am new to composting. I have sunflowers in my garden that I am cutting down. Can they go in a composter?

Yep you sure can. Anything that is of vegetable origin ie peeling, grass clippings etc. Don't put anything derived from meat or bones. I started composting 6 months ago and mine is looking good. Also my dustbin is only half full and I do my bit for the environment.

Any kind of plant or organic material can go in the composter. You can compost grass clippings, weeds, egg shells and other food waste, even old newspapers.

Yes you can, just remember to collect the seeds first! Run the mower over the rest or till (or dig) it in before frost. No problem.

put them in in thin layers between finer material.they will help to keep air in heap and aid drainage.

Absolutely! Any kind of vegetable matter can go into compost. You can also put kitchen scraps like fruit or potato peelings, leftover veggies, and so on. The only kind of plant you SHOULDN'T put into a compost pile is something that can harm YOU, like poison oak/poison ivy.

Sunflowers can be cut down and added to the compost heap. What I do is take off the huge flowerheads leaving a few spare inches of stem and then I leave them to dry out a bit I then put string on them and hang them up around the garden for the birds in Autumn. Cut the stems right down into small pieces as this will increase the breakdown rate, sunflowers stems can be very thick so doing this will help speedup the composting process. Ta ta Hezzie

If it has growen in your garden, it can go on your compost heap.
With the thicker steams, just cut them up in to more managable lenths then put them on the heap.

I am a professional horticulturist, organic head gardener who works along with nature and in the past 40+ years I was a head gardener in the south of England, in charge of a Southern University Nursery, a head gardener on two private estates in the midlands. Since having a back problem and a brain injury, I have lost my ability to concentrate so full time work is impossible and plant names sometimes go amiss. I do a few hours gardening a month just to keep my hand in. The gardening tips are free but not the manual work. If anyone needs help please get in touch.

I put everything but weeds into mine. I hope you left the unwanted seeds out for the birds though.
