Worm composting, what is the yellow liquid?
I saw on Victory Garden when the host was talking about worm composting he poured out this yellow type liquid and said to use it dilute it to one part liquid to 20 parts water. Where did the liquid come from? Exactly what is it? My worm compost only has dark brown almost black fertilizer. Where did this liquid come from and why don’t I have it? lol Thanks for the help!
I didn’t see the Victory Garden show about this. However I believe it’s worm tea, the liquid part of excrement. If you have a pre built plastic worm bin, there should be a spigot at the bottom of it. This is to drain off the tea, otherwise the bedding becomes too wet and the worms can die from drowning. This tea is then diluted as they said on VG and used to water your plants. It is wonderful fertilizer.

I don’t add anything but more garden soil (weed free) from time to time and only kitchen fruit and vegetable clippings weekly. The worms love the meat of sweet fruits such as mangos. After Halloween I always put a whole pumpkin in the bin and they love it, too. After adding to the bin, I always cover it with soil because otherwise it draws fruit flies that will lay eggs & multiply. I try to turn the compost at least once weekly.
Anything hard (like corn cob or pineapple waste takes longer to decompose & for the worms to digest. I’m careful what I add to the bin because of the live worms. My yard is a weed patch that is almost impossible to control so no yard clippings go to the worm bin. I don’t add the bay tree leaves from the tree next to the bin because I read that it isn’t good for the worm bin. Those things and my kitchen food waste including meats and bones goes into the city’s recycling green bin.
